Speaking to an enthusiastic crowd, Walz highlighted his coaching experience as part of his campaign message. Walz, who was an assistant coach at Mankato West High School in Minnesota during the 1990s, drew attention to the team's 1999 state championship win. Despite his limited coaching experience and never having held a head coach position, Walz has used his football background to draw comparisons to prominent figures in the sport, including Alabama Senator Tommy Tuberville. Tuberville, who has had a long coaching career including an SEC Championship, responded to Walz’s comments by questioning the comparison.
