Gennadiy Golovkin Vacates IBF Middleweight Title, Esquiva Falcao First In Line For Belt

Gennadiy Golovkin has given up his IBF middleweight title after holding it for over three years.

According to BoxingScene.com, Golovkin was previously ordered to face mandatory challenger Esquiva Falcao.

At present, Falcao and Australia's Michael Zerafa are ranked as the top two contenders for the vacant title.

Golovkin regained the IBF middleweight title in October 2019 after defeating Sergiy Derevyanchenko.

However, he was granted permission to fight outside of the middleweight division in September 17, where he challenged Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez.

Alvarez won the fight, making it 2-0-1 in their three-fight series.

The IBF mandatory with Falcao was to be enforced, but it remains unclear if those plans will continue now that the IBF mandatory will no longer take place.
