Grant Williams' Trash Talk Backfires As Celtics Lose To Cavaliers In Overtime

Boston Celtics forward Grant Williams' pre-free throw trash talk backfired as the team lost to the Cleveland Cavaliers in overtime.

The Celtics, who had already lost three of their last four games, led by 15 points in both the second and third quarter.

However, the Cavaliers rallied to tie the game at 109-109 in the final seconds.

With 5.8 seconds left, Williams was fouled and had the chance to make two game-winning free throws.

Williams, who had been an 86.4% free throw shooter over the last two seasons, missed both shots.

Mitchell confirmed after the game that Williams had said he would make both free throws, which was a product of some trash talk on Mitchell's part.

The Cavaliers did everything they could to ice Williams after his first missed free throw, but he missed the second as well.

The extra period did not go the Celtics' way either, and they lost 118-114. 

Mitchell had 40 points, 11 rebounds, and four assists, his third 40-point game of the season against the Celtics.

Williams finished the game with 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting and four rebounds.

The free throw attempts were his only trip to the line of the night.

The loss leaves the Celtics two games back from the first-place Milwaukee Bucks, who had their own rough loss to end a 16-game winning streak.

Meanwhile, the Cavaliers sit 4.5 games behind the Celtics at 41-26.

Despite Williams' trash talk and missed free throws, the Celtics will need to regroup and focus on their upcoming games to stay in the hunt for the top spot in their division.
