MLS Suspends New York Red Bulls' Dante Vanzeir For Using Racial Slur During Match

Major League Soccer has suspended New York Red Bulls forward, Dante Vanzeir, for six games and ordered him to undergo mandatory "training and education sessions" after he was accused of using a racial slur during a match against San Jose Earthquakes.

Vanzeir will also be fined an undisclosed amount and will be "prohibited from participating in the US Open Cup, MLS NEXT Pro games and exhibition matches until the suspension is completed."

The incident occurred during the 1-1 draw between the two teams on Saturday, with a scuffle ensuing after San Jose striker Jeremy Ebobisse alleged that a Red Bulls player used a racial slur early in the second half.

Although Ebobisse did not name anyone, Vanzeir issued an apology on Monday, taking full responsibility for his actions and acknowledging that he did not intend to cause any harm or offense.

While Vanzeir was allowed to continue playing in the match, Red Bulls manager Gerhard Struber said on Monday that he regretted the decision and that the right decision would have been to immediately remove Vanzeir from the game.

The disciplinary measures taken against Vanzeir come as part of the league's commitment to review and improve its in-game protocol.

In its statement, the league said that it will continue to monitor and assess its policies and procedures to ensure that they align with its values of inclusion and respect.

It is important to note that racism and discrimination have no place in any sport, and that the league's swift response to the incident sends a strong message that such behavior will not be tolerated.

By taking disciplinary action against Vanzeir and committing to review and improve its protocols, the league is demonstrating its commitment to creating a safe and inclusive environment for all players, staff, and fans.
