Conor McGregor's Desperate Demand For Trilogy Fight: Behind-The-Scenes Efforts Revealed

Conor McGregor, the former two-weight world champion, was eager for a trilogy fight against Dustin Poirier following his defeat at UFC 257.

Recently released footage reveals McGregor's relentless pursuit of the bout just days after his loss. McGregor, who suffered a second-round knockout in their Abu Dhabi rematch in January 2021, desired a quick return to the octagon to face his rival in May.

Initially, he requested the trilogy fight to be for the lightweight title, which had been vacated by Khabib Nurmagomedov, but his wish was not granted, and instead, he secured a non-title match scheduled for July.

In the documentary "McGregor Forever" on Netflix, McGregor, accompanied by his then-agent Tim Simpson and long-time manager Audie Attar, can be seen advocating for the trilogy fight.

Simpson, who has since parted ways with McGregor to start his own agency, insisted on a May or June date for the fight, while McGregor conveyed his demand to UFC President Dana White in a concise four-word text message. Though Attar's support for the rematch is not visible in the scene, Simpson claimed that Attar privately shared the sentiment.

McGregor emphasized that he wanted a "rematch for the strap," but it remains unknown how White responded to his request. Instead of a title fight, the lightweight belt was contested between Charles Oliveira and Michael Chandler, with the latter losing the match.

However, Chandler has now secured a lucrative bout with McGregor, scheduled for later this year. McGregor's rematch against Poirier at UFC 264 in July served as the main event, although it was not for a championship title.

In the documentary, Attar stated that McGregor's desire for the rematch demonstrated his resilience and growth, as he remains determined to avenge his losses.

Tragically, the trilogy fight ended in disaster for McGregor at the T-Mobile Arena. While he displayed a strong performance in the first round, he suffered a leg fracture seconds before the end of the session, resulting in a loss.

Currently, McGregor is still recovering from the injury and is set to make his comeback against Chandler at the end of this year.

Both fighters previously faced Poirier as coaches on The Ultimate Fighter, and it is anticipated that McGregor will announce an official December date for the bout in Las Vegas after his return to the USADA drug testing pool in the coming days, potentially during an episode of the show.

During the bout, Gaethje landed heavy punches and kicks that Khabib admitted were painful. “He hit like a truck,” Khabib said on Mike Tyson ’s Hotboxin' podcast. “His left hook, right hook, uppercut—they all hurt. But I made him hit me because I knew he didn’t like wrestling. My plan was to tire him out by standing with him, then take him to the ground and finish the fight.” Photo: Khabib Nurmagomedov / Instagram Khabib ended the fight with a triangle choke submission. He explained he chose the move out of respect for Gaethje’s parents, who were watching. “I didn’t want to break his arm in front of his parents,” Khabib said. “So I put him to sleep instead.
