Philadelphia 76ers Fire Doc Rivers After Playoff Collapse, Begin Search For New Head Coach

Doc Rivers has been unceremoniously fired by the Philadelphia 76ers after their disappointing exit from the playoffs at the hands of the Boston Celtics.

The team's collapse in the Eastern Conference semi-finals led to the decision to part ways with Rivers. Several potential candidates are being considered to replace him, including former 76er JJ Redick, as well as renowned coaches Mike Budenholzer, Nick Nurse, Frank Vogel, Mike D'Antoni, Monty Williams, and Sam Cassell.

Philadelphia had initially shown promise in the playoffs, leading the series against Boston 3-2. However, they failed to maintain their advantage and suffered back-to-back losses, culminating in a humiliating 112-88 defeat in Game 7.

This loss marked the end of Rivers' tenure with the franchise. During the regular season, the 76ers performed well, finishing as the third seed in the Eastern Conference with a 54-28 record.

They swept the Brooklyn Nets 4-0 in the first round of the playoffs. However, their inability to secure victory in crucial moments ultimately cost them a spot in the conference finals.

Rivers had been associated with the Philadelphia organization since 2020, but his time there will not be remembered fondly due to the team's postseason failures. In his first season, the 76ers claimed the top seed but lost in seven games to the Atlanta Hawks in the semi-finals.

The following season, they were the fourth seed and were eliminated by the top-seeded Miami Heat in six games in the semi-finals. The recent disappointment came as the 76ers led the series against Boston 3-2, only to falter in the decisive games.

They lost Game 6 at home 95-86 before a lackluster performance in Game 7 at TD Garden. The defeat raised speculation about the future of players like James Harden, who hinted at the possibility of leaving the team during the offseason.

Despite the mounting pressure on Rivers following his fifth consecutive Game 7 loss, star player Joel Embiid voiced support for the coach, praising his contributions to the team. However, it seems the front office had different plans, leading to Rivers' dismissal.

The Philadelphia 76ers now join a list of NBA teams with vacancies at the head coach position, including the Milwaukee Bucks, Phoenix Suns, Toronto Raptors, and Detroit Pistons, as they all embark on the search for a new leader.
