NBA veteran Chris Paul is set to embark on a new chapter of his career with the Golden State Warriors, as a trade agreement has been reached between the Warriors and the Washington Wizards involving Jordan Poole, according to a source familiar with the matter.
The trade, which is still pending finalization and NBA approval, includes additional draft assets, as reported by The Associated Press. ESPN was the first to break the news of the deal between the teams.
Expressing his enthusiasm about the move, Chris Paul, who is currently on a book tour, shared his excitement with The Charlotte Observer on Thursday. He also revealed that he has already spoken to Warriors star Stephen Curry, describing the conversation as positive.

This trade comes after the Wizards recently acquired Paul from the Phoenix Suns in exchange for Bradley Beal. Chris Paul's pursuit of an NBA championship has been hindered by the Warriors on two occasions in the past. In 2018, he suffered an injury during the Western Conference finals while playing for the Houston Rockets, causing them to lose the series.
The Warriors went on to secure the NBA title that year. Similarly, in 2019, the Warriors defeated Paul and the Rockets in the Western Conference semifinals before falling to the Toronto Raptors in the NBA Finals. The trade presents an opportunity for the Warriors to gain financial flexibility in the future, as Jordan Poole is entering a lucrative four-year, $128 million contract, while Chris Paul is owed approximately $31 million for the upcoming season with no guaranteed money beyond that.
Additionally, this move could potentially place Paul in a new role coming off the bench. Despite his extensive experience and impressive track record of starting every regular-season and playoff game he has played, it is unlikely that he will displace guards Stephen Curry or Klay Thompson in the Warriors' starting lineup.
As a 38-year-old entering his 19th NBA season, Chris Paul finds himself in a situation where he may need to adapt to a different position. However, there is a notable tradeoff, as the Warriors, with their four championships in the last decade, are expected to be strong contenders for the title in the upcoming season.
Paul, who reached the NBA Finals with the Phoenix Suns in 2021 but fell short, has yet to secure a championship in his career. In the previous season, he averaged 13.9 points and 8.9 assists for the Suns.
On the other side of the trade, Jordan Poole, who recently turned 24, joins a Washington team that is currently undergoing a complete rebuild. Poole showcased his scoring ability last season, averaging 20.4 points for the Warriors.
His time with Golden State was marred by an incident where veteran Draymond Green punched him during a practice session, leading to Green briefly stepping away from the team. The Warriors are reportedly interested in retaining Green, who is set to become a free agent.
