Tragedy struck the cycling world as Gino Mäder, a 26-year-old Swiss cyclist, lost his life following a crash during the fifth stage of the Tour de Suisse.
The Bahrain Victorious team, to which Mäder belonged, announced the devastating news on Friday. The accident occurred when Mäder and American rider Magnus Sheffield collided at high speed while descending the Albula Pass towards La Punt, where the stage concluded.
Mäder fell into a ravine and was discovered motionless in the water, but he was resuscitated and airlifted to a hospital in Chur. On June 16th, Bahrain Victorious released a statement expressing their deep sorrow over Mäder's passing, acknowledging the severity of his injuries sustained during the crash.

The team extended their heartfelt condolences to Mäder's family and loved ones, emphasizing the immense impact of this tragic incident. The Tour de Suisse also conveyed their grief, describing Mäder as an exceptional cyclist and an extraordinary individual.
The UCI, the governing body of cycling, recognized Mäder as a promising young rider with a bright future in the sport. Mäder had been a member of Bahrain Victorious since 2021 and had achieved notable successes, including stage victories in the Giro d'Italia and the Tour de Suisse.
Additionally, he secured a fifth-place finish in the general classification of the Vuelta a España two years ago, earning him the young rider classification.
Known as one of Switzerland's top cyclists and a popular figure in the peloton, Mäder had demonstrated his commitment to environmental causes by pledging to donate one Swiss franc for every rider who finished behind him in races throughout 2022.
Milan Erzen, the managing director of Bahrain Victorious, expressed the team's devastation at the loss of their exceptional cyclist. Erzen highlighted Mäder's talent, dedication, and enthusiasm, which served as an inspiration to all.

Magnus Sheffield, the 21-year-old rider from Ineos Grenadiers involved in the crash, suffered a concussion and bruises but remained responsive. He was taken to Samedan hospital and kept under observation overnight for further assessment due to his concussion and soft tissue damage.
During the final 20 kilometers of the Tour de Suisse stage, a poignant tribute took place, with the peloton being neutralized in honor of Mäder. Six Bahrain Victorious riders were allowed to cross the finish line first, receiving applause from spectators lining the course.
