Jose Benavidez Sr. has revealed that his son David will be prepared to step in as a replacement for Jermell Charlo in his upcoming fight against Canelo Alvarez if Charlo gets injured during training.
However, Jose Sr. doesn't believe Canelo would accept David as a substitute. Despite this, they want to be prepared just in case. Jose Sr. seems desperate, but it is unlikely that David will ever get the opportunity to face Canelo.
Training as a backup for Jermell's potential injury won't benefit Jose Sr. or David in their quest for a fight against Canelo. Their attempts at being polite and complimentary to Canelo are futile, as the numerous insults and trash talk they have hurled at him in the past won't be easily forgotten.

The real reason Canelo won't fight David is something fans can only speculate about, but it remains clear that all the talk from the Benavidez camp is secondary to that primary reason. Instead of pursuing a fight with Canelo, Jose Sr. should focus on guiding David's career towards superstardom by taking on tough opponents such as David Morrell Jr, Dmitry Bivol, Artur Beterbiev, and Joe Smith Jr.
A potential matchup against Morrell, who currently holds the WBA 'regular' super middleweight title and has been called out by David, could be a good starting point. By accepting this challenge, David could prove that he is not afraid of Morrell, contrary to what boxing fans currently believe.
It is expected that Canelo will eventually face both Charlo brothers. Jose Sr. believes Jermell has a better chance of defeating Canelo than his brother Jermall, citing Jermall's inactivity and mental problems as reasons for his doubt. He suggests that Jermell should adopt a boxing strategy against Canelo and focus on winning by points, as knocking out Canelo would be a difficult feat.
Jose Sr. hopes that Jermell's victory could lead to a future fight between Jermall and Canelo in 2024. Regarding the possibility of David fighting Jermell or Canelo, Jose Sr. remains skeptical. He believes David is too big and young to face Jermell, especially considering that Jermell hasn't even fought at 160 pounds.
If Jermell becomes the undisputed champion at 168 pounds, Jose Sr. speculates that he might vacate the belts or face mandatory challenges before a potential clash with Canelo or Jermall.
Jose Sr. expresses his excitement for the upcoming fight between Jermell and Canelo, acknowledging the size disadvantage Jermell will face against the division's monster. He compares Jermell moving up two weight classes to lightweight Mikey Garcia's jump to welterweight to face Errol Spence Jr.
He expresses satisfaction with the big fights being made in partnership with PBC and states that they will be ready in case Jermell gets injured during training, although he doesn't foresee David fighting either Canelo or Jermell.
