Masataka Yoshida Makes History: Joins Ted Williams As First Red Sox Player In Decades To Achieve Remarkable Milestone

Masataka Yoshida, the talented Japanese rookie, has achieved a remarkable milestone that no other player has reached thus far in the 2023 season, putting him in the esteemed company of baseball legend Ted Williams.

In a recent game against the Chicago Cubs, Yoshida displayed his prowess at the plate, finishing with a 2-for-5 performance, marking his eighth consecutive game with multiple hits. This extraordinary accomplishment makes Yoshida the first left-handed batter for the Boston Red Sox to achieve this feat since Williams accomplished it in 1940, as confirmed by former team employee JP Long.

No other player in the current season has managed to string together such an impressive streak of eight games with two or more hits. What's more, Yoshida's achievement is particularly notable as no other Japanese-born player in the history of Major League Baseball, including the illustrious Ichiro Suzuki, has accomplished this feat.

Suzuki, a Hall of Fame outfielder, holds the record for the most hits in a single season. During his streak, Yoshida has consistently recorded exactly two hits in seven consecutive games and achieved three hits in the game prior to that, resulting in a remarkable batting average of .486. As a result, his season average has risen to an impressive .317.

Notably, Yoshida became the first Red Sox rookie since Johnny Pesky in 1942 to achieve seven consecutive multi-hit games just before the All-Star break. Beyond his extraordinary hitting ability, the 29-year-old outfielder possesses an .872 OPS, showcasing his overall offensive prowess.

Yoshida has contributed significantly to the Red Sox's success in the 2023 season, amassing 10 home runs, 19 doubles, two triples, 44 RBI, and six stolen bases in 79 appearances. Yoshida's consistent performance at the plate has undoubtedly played a pivotal role in Boston's recent victory, as they defeated the Cubs 8-3.
