Carlos Rodón Offers Apology To Coach After Frustrating Outing

Carlos Rodón expressed his remorse on Saturday, extending an apology to pitching coach Matt Blake for his actions during the Yankees' game against the Royals at Kauffman Stadium.

The left-handed pitcher, visibly frustrated, had turned his back on Blake during a mound visit in the first inning, marking one of the worst performances of his career. In that inning, Rodón faced eight batters and was unable to retire any, allowing all of them to score.

Matt Blake commented on the situation, acknowledging that emotions run high in such intense moments and that Rodón's fiery demeanor is a double-edged sword, both a strength and a potential weakness. Following the game, Rodón had a lengthy closed-door meeting with manager Aaron Boone, marking the conclusion of his challenging first season with the Yankees, a team he joined on a six-year, $162 million contract.

Boone mentioned that earlier in the season, Rodón's actions might have led to disciplinary actions. This incident wasn't the first in a turbulent season for him; he notably blew a kiss to a heckling fan in July.

However, Boone emphasized that there were no ill intentions on Rodón's part. Rodón, who had faced injury setbacks throughout the season, didn't make his Yankees debut until July due to back issues and also missed time in August with a strained left hamstring.

Matt Blake sees potential for improvement now that Rodón has a full year with the team and a better understanding of the feedback he needs. Despite only throwing 35 pitches in his frustrating outing, Rodón volunteered to return to the mound if necessary in the Yankees' remaining games.

However, he expressed eagerness to put the challenging 2023 season behind him, looking forward to some personal time before focusing on his offseason training and his goals for the future.
