Astros reliever Bryan Abreu has been handed a two-game suspension and an undisclosed fine by Major League Baseball (MLB) for intentionally hitting the Rangers' Adolis García with a 99 mph fastball in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series.

The incident, which led to a benches-clearing confrontation, has also resulted in fines for Houston manager Dusty Baker, Adolis García, and other players involved.

MLB's senior vice president for on-field operations, Michael Hill, made the official announcement of the suspension and fine.

Abreu, in a post-game statement, claimed his pitch was a result of missing his intended target, but all six umpires ruled that it was intentional, leading to Abreu's immediate ejection, along with García and manager Dusty Baker.

The incident occurred in García's first at-bat following his three-run home run off Justin Verlander. Rangers manager Bruce Bochy expressed his frustration, saying, "The guy hits a three-run homer; the next time up, he gets smoked there. I'd be upset, too, if I was Doli."

In addition to Bryan Abreu's suspension and fine, Houston pitcher Lance McCullers Jr. and Rangers pitcher Matt Bush have been fined and will not be allowed in the dugout for the remainder of the ALCS. Despite the controversy, the Astros secured a 5-4 victory in the game, taking a 3-2 series lead.

Abreu has chosen to appeal the suspension, allowing him to remain on the active roster and pitch during the postseason while the appeal process unfolds. Per the Collective Bargaining Agreement, a hearing regarding postseason conduct suspensions will be held within 48 hours of the appeal's receipt.

He explained he chose the move out of respect for Gaethje’s parents, who were watching. “I didn’t want to break his arm in front of his parents,” Khabib said. “So I put him to sleep instead.
