Washington Commanders Trade Chase Young To 49ers For Third-Round Pick

In a stunning move, the Washington Commanders have traded their star defensive end, Chase Young, to the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for a third-round pick.

The trade was officially announced on Tuesday, shaking up the NFL landscape and marking a significant change in direction for both franchises. This decision follows Washington's earlier trade of fellow defensive end Montez Sweat to the Chicago Bears for a 2024 second-round pick on the same day, indicating a strategic shift in their roster.

Chase Young, who was set to become a free agent after the season, had not been offered a fifth-year option by Washington, which would have cost them $17.452 million against the 2024 salary cap. For the 49ers, this acquisition addresses their pressing need for pass-rush support amid a three-game losing streak.

The trade for Young comes after coach Kyle Shanahan mentioned the team's intentions to explore options for improvement. The deal with the 49ers is partly due to lingering concerns about Young's past knee injuries, which had led Washington to hesitate in making a long-term commitment.

Despite these concerns, Young has demonstrated his value with five sacks in seven games and 16 incompletions forced, making him one of the top performers in the league this season. In return for Young, the 49ers are expected to send a compensatory third-round pick to Washington, further enhancing their defensive line with a player who boasts a 25% pass rush win rate this season.

This move adds to the 49ers' significant investments in their defensive line, joining a group of former first-round picks and high-profile signings. Despite these investments, the team has struggled to generate consistent pressure on quarterbacks this season.

For Washington, trading Young and Sweat allows them to focus on developing their quarterback, Sam Howell, and investing in other areas. The team has previously handed out big contracts to defensive tackles but has not seen the expected improvement in defensive performance.

Their defense currently ranks near the bottom of the league in scoring and yardage. Chase Young, the No. 2 pick in the 2020 draft, had an impactful rookie season but faced challenges in 2021 due to injury and the need to rebuild his confidence in his knee.

This trade marks a significant chapter in his NFL career and could have far-reaching implications for both the Commanders and the 49ers.
