NBA Levies Fines On Sixers And Pelicans For Injury Reporting Violations

The NBA has recently announced fines for violations of the league's injury reporting rules on the Philadelphia 76ers and the New Orleans Pelicans.

The Sixers face a $75,000 penalty, while the Pelicans were fined $25,000. The disciplinary action stems from Joel Embiid's abrupt absence due to left knee soreness in a nationally televised game against the Denver Nuggets. 

Despite appearing uninjured on the initial report, Embiid's sudden exclusion raised eyebrows, prompting the league to intervene.

New Orleans encountered a similar situation with Trey Murphy, who was not listed on the injury report for a game against the Milwaukee Bucks despite concerns about his playing conditions after knee surgery.

Embiid's knee issues, persistent throughout the season, were allegedly downplayed by the Sixers, leading to the heightened fine. The NBA clarified that Embiid's injury was an existing one, sparing the team from violating the newly instituted player participation policy.

The Philadelphia franchise had previously faced penalties for similar infractions, contributing to the severity of the fine.

The league's commitment to enforcing rules was highlighted by a $100,000 fine imposed on the Brooklyn Nets last month, marking the only instance this season of a team violating the new player participation policy. (Source: ESPN)
