The NBA has handed down suspensions to five players, including star forward Jimmy Butler, in the aftermath of a heated altercation during Friday's clash between the New Orleans Pelicans and the Miami Heat.

The league announced on Sunday that Butler, along with Pelicans' Naji Marshall, will serve a one-game suspension each for their involvement in instigating and engaging in the on-court scuffle.

Heat center Thomas Bryant and Pelicans guard Jose Alvarado face stiffer penalties, receiving three-game suspensions for leaving the bench area and entering the altercation.

Additionally, Heat forward Nikola Jović will sit out one game for joining the brawl from the bench. The incident unfolded early in the fourth quarter with the Heat leading 84-80. A foul by Miami's Kevin Love on Pelicans forward Zion Williamson sparked the confrontation.

Tensions escalated as Marshall confronted Love, drawing Butler into the fray. Shoves were exchanged before the players were separated at midcourt. However, a secondary altercation erupted along the sideline involving Bryant, Alvarado, and Jović.

All four ejected players – Butler, Marshall, Bryant, and Alvarado – will face game suspensions. Despite the chaos, the Heat managed to secure a 106-95 victory.

As a result of the suspensions, Butler and Jović will miss the upcoming game against the Sacramento Kings, while Bryant will be sidelined for that game and matchups against the Portland Trail Blazers and Denver Nuggets.

Marshall and Alvarado will each miss their respective upcoming games against the Chicago Bulls, New York Knicks, and Indiana Pacers.

The league has reiterated its commitment to maintaining the integrity of the game and ensuring the safety of players on and off the court. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of sportsmanship and control during intense matchups. (SOURCE: Yahoo Sports)
