David Johnson Announces Retirement From NFL After 8 Seasons

David Johnson, a standout running back and former All-Pro with the Arizona Cardinals, has announced his retirement from the NFL after eight seasons. Johnson, 32, shared the news on his Instagram on Sunday, reflecting on his football journey and expressing gratitude for his supporters.

Johnson was drafted in the third round by the Cardinals in 2015. Despite not being a highly regarded prospect, he excelled at Northern Iowa, amassing over 6,400 yards and 63 touchdowns in college.

Johnson made an immediate impact in the NFL. He stepped up as a starter when Chris Johnson was injured and delivered impressive performances, including a game with 187 rushing yards and three touchdowns against the Philadelphia Eagles.

In 2016, Johnson had his best season, rushing for 1,239 yards and 16 touchdowns, while also catching 80 passes for 879 yards and four touchdowns. His 20 total touchdowns that season remain a franchise record, earning him All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors.

Johnson played five seasons with the Cardinals, recording 3,128 rushing yards and 2,219 receiving yards, with 48 total touchdowns. He later joined the Houston Texans and finished his career with a brief stint at the New Orleans Saints.


In his retirement post, Johnson thanked his teammates, coaches, and fans, and expressed his hope to positively impact others. He also acknowledged the role of his faith in his journey and looked forward to his next chapter in life.
