Magic Johnson Blames Lakers' Load Management For Playoff Exit

The Los Angeles Lakers faced another disappointing early playoff exit, this time at the hands of the Denver Nuggets for the second consecutive year. 

NBA legend Magic Johnson has pointed the finger at what he believes is a crucial factor: load management.

Johnson expressed his thoughts on X, formerly Twitter, stating, "The Lakers have nobody but themselves to blame. They wouldn’t have been in the play-in game or finished as a 7th seed this season if they hadn’t lost too many games because of load management."

While injuries and late-game heroics played their part in the Lakers' downfall, Johnson's focus remains on the team's decision-making regarding player rest. Despite LeBron James and Anthony Davis playing through injuries, Johnson believes that sitting out games due to load management may have contributed to the team's struggles.

James, despite dealing with an ankle injury, played in almost every game down the stretch, and Davis also appeared in the majority of games. Additionally, six Lakers players participated in 70 or more games during the season.

After the Game 5 loss, uncertainty looms over the Lakers' offseason. James, who has spent the last six seasons with the franchise, was noncommittal about his future with the team. With a June 29 deadline to decide on his contract, James faces the possibility of becoming an unrestricted free agent if he opts out.

As the Lakers face a period of reflection and decision-making, the impact of load management on their playoff aspirations remains a topic of discussion and scrutiny.
