Angel Reese Defends Hitting Caitlin Clark In Head, Resulting In Flagrant Foul: 'It's A Basketball Play'

The highly anticipated rematch between the Chicago Sky and Indiana Fever on Sunday afternoon saw tensions rise when Angel Reese hit Caitlin Clark in the head during a block attempt. This incident led to a flagrant foul in the third quarter of the Fever's 91-83 victory.

When asked about the flagrant foul after the game, Reese was quick to defend herself. "It was a basketball play," Reese said. "I can't control the refs. They obviously affected the game a lot tonight."

Reese pointed out that the officiating seemed uneven. The Sky were called for 21 personal fouls, while the Fever had 17. Both Reese and rookie Kamilla Cardoso ended the game with five fouls each. "I think we went up really strong a lot of times, and we didn’t get a lot of calls," Reese said. "Some people got a special whistle. But just being able to play hard as best as we can."

Clark, however, didn't seem upset about the foul. She focused on making her free throws and viewed the physicality as part of the game. "That’s all I’m thinking about. Just a part of basketball. It is what it is. Just trying to make a play on the ball and get the block. It happens," Clark said.

Clark praised Reese's competitive spirit and the passion both players bring to the game. "I think it’s just the emotion and passion we play with," she said. "People love to see that, and it’s good for the game. We’re competitors. That’s the way the game should be. It’s going to get feisty, it’s going to get physical."


Fever head coach Christie Sides agreed with the officials' decision on the flagrant foul. "The right call was made in that moment," Sides said. "Flagrant-1, two free throws and the ball. Just make the right call in those moments, and we can move forward."

Overall, both teams played hard, and the game showcased the competitive nature and growing popularity of women's basketball.
