Leo Messi Sets New Record, Surpassing Cristiano Ronaldo

Lionel Messi continues to break records with the Argentina National Team. His latest milestone came during a friendly match against Ecuador, held at Soldier Field stadium in Chicago.

Messi came on in the 56th minute, replacing Angel Di Maria, and played his 181st match for a World Cup-winning country. This appearance set a new record, surpassing Sergio Ramos's 180 appearances for Spain.

Messi's achievement is one Cristiano Ronaldo cannot match, as Ronaldo has not won a World Cup with Portugal. Messi’s record came in his first game with the Albiceleste in 2024, watched by 85,000 spectators.

This adds to his long list of accomplishments since his debut against Hungary on August 17, 2005. In another notable feat, Messi scored the only goal in Argentina's 1-0 win against Ecuador in the Conmebol qualifiers on September 8, 2023.

This goal, scored from a free kick at Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires, tied him with Luis Suarez as the top scorer in the competition with 29 goals. Messi then took the lead by scoring twice against Peru at Estadio Nacional in Lima on October 18.

As Messi's career progresses, his records continue to grow, solidifying his place in football history.
