NBA Commissioner Adam Silver On Caitlin Clark Foul: ‘Welcome To The League’

In his pre-NBA Finals press conference on Thursday, Commissioner Adam Silver commented on the flagrant foul Chicago Sky guard Chennedy Carter committed against Indiana Fever player Caitlin Clark last weekend. Silver described it as a “Welcome to the league” moment, saying such incidents are “nothing new in basketball.”

Carter’s foul, which involved her hip and shoulder hitting Clark while her back was turned, has sparked criticism. Many believe Carter intentionally targeted Clark, causing her to fall.

Silver discussed several topics, including Clark’s rising prominence in the league, the NBA's future, and upcoming media rights deals. He emphasized that Clark is tough and can handle herself, stating, “I want to see Caitlin treated fairly and appropriately in the league. She’s a tough player.”

Clark, addressing the incident, said she’s trying not to let it affect her. “I know I’m going to take a couple of hard shots a game... I’m trying not to let it bother me and just stay focused.”

Silver also highlighted the positive impact of Clark's rivalry with Chicago Sky star Angel Reese on women's basketball. He noted the growing interest in the WNBA, attributing much of it to Clark’s influence, and remarked on the benefits of such rivalries for the sport.


Lastly, Silver addressed ESPN host Pat McAfee’s apology for calling Clark a derogatory term during a segment discussing her rise in the WNBA. Silver accepted the apology, calling it a “misstep.”
