Phil Handy Unlikely To Return To Lakers After Coaching Snub

Phil Handy, a veteran assistant coach, is unlikely to return to the Los Angeles Lakers, according to Anthony Irwin of Lakers Daily. This comes after Handy was overlooked for the head coach position in the last two hiring cycles.

Despite rumors that the Lakers might rehire him, sources say Handy was unhappy about not being considered for the head coach job. The Lakers recently appointed J.J. Redick as their new head coach.

Irwin mentioned that the Lakers are considering other candidates like Jacque Vaughn and Dwane Casey to join Redick’s staff. They are also keeping Scott Brooks in mind to provide experience to the new coaching team.

Handy, along with head coach Darvin Ham, was let go after the Lakers’ 2024 playoff run. Handy had been with the Lakers for five seasons, starting in 2019-20. During his time, the team won the 2020 NBA title but couldn't maintain that success in the following seasons.

Before his time with the Lakers, Handy helped the Cleveland Cavaliers win their first NBA Championship in 2016 and the Toronto Raptors secure their first title in 2019.

It remains to be seen where Handy will continue his coaching career, but it seems it won’t be with the Lakers in the upcoming season.
