Mayweather Controls Fight Against Gotti After Referee Change

Floyd Mayweather easily handled
John Gotti III in their exhibition fight rematch in Mexico City. The fight, which took place on Saturday night, had a surprising twist when the referee was changed in the middle of the bout.

Mayweather first fought Gotti, who is the grandson of the New York crime boss John Gotti, in June 2023. That fight ended in chaos when a brawl broke out in the sixth round.

In this rematch, Panamanian referee Hector Afu left the ring in the second round after a dispute with Mayweather. Afu was upset after Mayweather argued against a call, claiming that one of his punches was unfairly judged as illegal. Mexican referee Alfredo Uruzquieta then stepped in to finish officiating the fight.

Even with the referee switch, Mayweather, 47, stayed in control. The crowd of 22,000 in Mexico City grew frustrated with Gotti's lack of punches and began to boo. Gotti did pick up his pace in the fourth round, but Mayweather remained dominant throughout the fight.

Since it was an exhibition match, no official winner was declared, and the result doesn’t affect either fighter’s career records. Mayweather, who retired in 2017 with a perfect 50-0 record, continues to take part in exhibition fights, including a previous match against Logan Paul.
