Judge Likely To Rule In Mariah Carey’s Favor In Christmas Song Copyright Case

Mariah Carey’s famous holiday song, "All I Want for Christmas Is You," has been at the center of a legal battle. Mississippi artist Vince Vance, known for his 1989 song of the same name, claims that Carey copied his work. However, after a long process, a California judge is leaning toward dismissing the case.

This case started in 2022, when Vance filed a lawsuit saying that Carey’s hit song copied his song’s style and structure. After the first case was dropped, Vance filed again, claiming Carey took the idea and “pretended” it was hers.

Carey’s lawyers, on the other hand, argue that any similarities between the songs are just holiday themes like "Santa Claus" and "mistletoe," which are common in Christmas songs. They say these themes are public property, and the two songs are not substantially similar.

At a recent court hearing, Judge Mónica Ramírez Almadani said she is likely to agree with Carey’s side, which could mean the case will be dropped soon. The judge is also considering a separate request from Carey’s team to penalize Vance’s side for filing what they say is a “frivolous” lawsuit.

The judge hasn’t made a final decision yet, but if she does dismiss the case, Carey’s holiday hit will continue to play on for fans without legal trouble.

Carey’s song, first released in 1994, has become a holiday classic and even reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 multiple times during the holiday season.
