Queen guitarist Brian May has admitted he was never fully happy with the band’s first single, “Keep Yourself Alive.”
Despite its success and lasting appeal, May said the studio version lost the natural feel of the demo that first caught their energy.
He explained that the original demo was more relaxed and alive, and he’s believed ever since that making demos can sometimes hurt the final recording.
The song, from Queen’s 1973 debut album, introduced the world to their layered sound and powerful vocals.
May, who built many of Queen’s trademark guitar sounds, felt the track didn’t capture the same magic as their early take.
He once said, “The more you chase it, the further it gets away.” Still, fans embraced the song as a strong start to the band’s legendary career.
Even if May wasn’t satisfied, “Keep Yourself Alive” remains a classic moment in rock history.
