Dwight Howard Inks Contract With Philippines Team, Eyes NBA Comeback Amidst Dubai International Basketball Championship

In a surprising move, Dwight Howard, an eight-time NBA All-Star, is set to join the Philippines-based Strong Group, as reported by Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium. 

The deal is structured to cover the Dubai International Basketball Championship, scheduled from Jan. 19 to Jan. 28 in the United Arab Emirates. Despite the international stint, Howard hasn't given up on his NBA dreams. 

The 38-year-old recently worked out with the Golden State Warriors ahead of the 2023-24 season and even humorously expressed interest in joining the struggling Detroit Pistons during their historic losing streak in December.

While the ship may seem to have sailed on a full-fledged NBA comeback, Howard remains optimistic. His last NBA appearance was in the 2021-22 season, where he averaged 6.2 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 0.6 blocks in 60 games.

Unsuccessful in securing an NBA spot last year, Howard ventured to Taiwan's T1 League, playing for the Taoyuan Leopards. He delivered outstanding performances, averaging 23.2 points, 16.2 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks, earning All-Star honors and participating in the league's Three-Point Contest.

By opting for a short-term contract with the Strong Group, Howard keeps the door to the NBA open. With the Feb. 8 trade deadline approaching, the veteran center could become an intriguing option for teams exploring the buyout market or seeking hidden gems in free agency.
