Hideo Kojima Believes ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ Will Be Better Liked In 10-20 Years

Video game creator Hideo Kojima, famous for "Death Stranding," thinks "Joker: Folie à Deux" may get more respect in the future. The movie, which stars Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, didn’t do well with critics and has only made a bit over $200 million at the box office—much less than the first "Joker" film, which earned over $1 billion. Kojima believes that, with time, people might come to appreciate it.

Kojima shared his thoughts on social media, saying the movie opens with an animated sequence like the classic "Looney Tunes." This leads into a story where Joker's identity is questioned—who is he really, and is he even one person? He feels this film goes deeper into who Joker (or Arthur, Joker's alter ego) really is, something that might make audiences think more about hero and villain roles.

Kojima commented that today, many movies feature "poetic justice" heroes who fight against villains, and even some movies focus on the villains as main characters. He wonders if audiences will come to see Joker as more than just a villain. Kojima says this film is complex and might need more time to be understood fully, especially as hero movies continue to grow in popularity.

Kojima isn't the only one speaking up. Director Quentin Tarantino recently praised Joaquin Phoenix’s acting, calling it one of the best performances he's ever seen. He also thinks the movie feels like Joker himself was in charge, creating something bold and unexpected.

"Joker: Folie à Deux" is still playing in theaters and is available to watch at home on PVOD. It might take years for opinions to change, but for now, Kojima and Tarantino are two fans willing to defend it. Source: Variety
