LiAngelo Ball Reflects On 2017 Arrest In China For Shoplifting

LiAngelo Ball, brother of NBA stars Lonzo and LaMelo Ball, recently talked about being arrested in China in 2017 for stealing sunglasses from a Louis Vuitton store. At the time, Ball was 18 and playing basketball for UCLA.

During an interview on Unapologetically Angel with Angel Reese, Ball admitted to making a bad decision. "I knew it was wrong," he said. "I was in the wrong spot at the wrong time, making dumb choices."

Ball and two UCLA teammates, Cody Riley and Jalen Hill, were arrested in Hangzhou. They were accused of stealing while on a team trip. Ball said he realized immediately he had made a mistake. "Right when I left the store, I knew it was over," he recalled.

The incident gained global attention when then-President Donald Trump stepped in. Trump asked Chinese President Xi Jinping to help resolve the situation. After the players were released, Trump tweeted: “You’re welcome... Be careful, there are many pitfalls on the long and winding road of life!"

Ball’s basketball journey has had ups and downs since then. He went undrafted in 2018 and played in Lithuania, the Junior Basketball Association (created by his father, LaVar Ball), and the NBA G-League. He signed short-term contracts with the Detroit Pistons and Charlotte Hornets but was waived each time.

While LiAngelo has yet to play in an NBA game, his brothers are making their mark. LaMelo plays for the Charlotte Hornets, and Lonzo is with the Chicago Bulls.

Reflecting on the incident, Ball said, “It’s been years, and I haven’t been in trouble since.” Source
