Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett talked about his love for horror movie memorabilia in episode 117 of The Metallica Report podcast.
A lifelong horror fan, Hammett shared his three favorite pieces — Boris Karloff’s outfit from The Black Cat (1933), the axe used by Jack Nicholson in The Shining, and Bela Lugosi’s Dracula cape from Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein.
He said he was shocked to find the Karloff costume still intact after 80 years and even tried it on at home.
He also owns many props from the original Frankenstein lab, which he has worked hard to bring back together.
Hammett said each piece inspires him musically and makes him feel like a “protector and curator” of horror history.
He believes these items are important parts of world culture and should be shared with fans.
Hammett has shown parts of his collection at events like “Kirk’s Crypt” and in his 2012 book Too Much Horror Business.
He added that horror movies and heavy metal share the same energy, both thrilling and emotional.
