Fred Durst has shared an emotional video tribute to Limp Bizkit bassist Sam Rivers, who died on October 19 at age 48.
In an eight-minute Instagram video, Durst called Rivers a “gifted and wonderful person” and remembered how they first met at a small bar in Jacksonville Beach, Florida.
He said he was blown away by Rivers’ smooth playing and unique five-string bass style, which made him stand out instantly.
After the show, Durst asked him to start a band, and Rivers agreed on the spot, marking the beginning of Limp Bizkit.
Durst said he then introduced Rivers to drummer John Otto, Rivers’ cousin, and their early jam sessions in Sam’s garage felt “magical.”
He recalled Rivers’ love for grunge bands like Alice in Chains and Stone Temple Pilots, which helped shape Limp Bizkit’s sound.
“He could pull this beautiful sadness out of the bass,” Durst said.
The singer ended his message in tears, saying, “It’s so tragic that he’s not here right now, but his gift will keep on giving forever.”
