Legendary extreme metal drummer Nick Barker has revealed he is battling stage five chronic kidney failure.
In a new talk with the Pod Scum podcast, the former CRADLE OF FILTH and DIMMU BORGIR drummer said he has been on dialysis three times a week since January 2023.
Barker shared that he is on the transplant list in Vancouver and is waiting for a new kidney once he loses about 20 to 30 pounds.
He said the wait for surgery could happen anytime, describing it as “just a waiting game.”
Despite his health issues, Barker still plays drums when he can but admitted it’s harder to stay inspired without a full band to jam with.
The 52-year-old began his career in 1993 with CRADLE OF FILTH before joining DIMMU BORGIR in 1999, later working with many major metal acts.
Barker said his illness has made him appreciate life more after years of touring the world.
He also recalled collapsing during a U.S. tour and said hospital bills reached $98,000, but he received care through a waiver program.
